In 1859, pioneers Alexander and Catherine Lince Beckstead settled in South Jordan, Utah, living in what was essentially a cave dug out from the river bank. They used mud to create adobe bricks and logs to form a roof. When more settlers came into what is now the South Jordan area, it gave rise to the White Fawn Flour Mill and then a growing rural farming community. The population grew steadily and boomed in the 1980s and 1990s, reaching about 56,000 by 2010. The most recognizable landmark in South Jordan is the Latter-day Saints' Jordan River Temple.
South Jordan, about 10 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, is also known for Roseman University of Health Sciences. The institution offers programs in dental medicine, pharmacy, nursing and business administration. From the South Jordan campus, visitors can view the peaks of two mountain ranges, the Oquirrhs and the Wasatches. Many South Jordan visitors like to get outside and stroll along Bingham Creek Trail and Jordan River Trail, which both have outstanding views of the rocky backdrop. For more outdoor fun, take in a horse race or the annual county fair at Salt Lake County Equestrian Park and Events Center.
Among South Jordan's top attractions are three golf courses. Mulligan's Golf and Games has two nine-hole golf challenges that appeal to veteran players as well as newbies. Mulligan's also has two 18-hole miniature golf courses, and a driving range and batting cages for those wanting to try out their swings. Glenmore Golf Course offers a higher level of play, with four difficult holes on the 18-hole, par-72 course. Mountain View Golf Course is also a par-72, 18-hole playing field with a dress code—visitors must have a collared shirt.
